Linda Covello covered Theia’s fall fashion show at NY Fashion Week, here’s her first hand report:
Fashion Week kicked off on Wednesday with an exclusive preview of Theia’s Fall 2011 collection. Creative Director Don O’Neill presented his mystically and galactically inspired gowns and dresses to a rapt audience who seemed transfixed listening to him explain how his designs are a reflection of a lifelong obsession with his own Celtic heritage as well as the mythical and powerful Irish national treasure, “The Book of Kells”. The calligraphy and design motifs within this ancient text are reflected on the fabrics of the luminous dresses and gowns that managed to catch the light in a very mystical way as the models twirled and walked in the bright white showroom.
O’Neill has a lustrous fashion background that includes training with Lacroix in Paris as well as time spent as the steward of the Badgley Mischka Platinum label. His earliest inspiration comes from his mother and her elegant Bergdorf Goodman dresses and Ib Jorgensen couture suits, which must have lit up the small seaside village of Ballyheigue in Ireland where O’Neill was raised. Now his lovely and ethereal dresses are gracing the sylphlike forms of Carrie Underwood and Taylor Swift. The lovely young Swift just wore O’Neill’s silvery glimmering and shimmering mini dress on October 26th on NBC’s The Today Show for her album release performance.
