And it was all good…. Especially celebrating Cinco de Mayo, got sombreros, too…. My husband, Richard surprised me with a birthday visit to Morongo Resort & Casino in March. We enjoyed our two-night fling so much we recently returned this Desert Oasis for Cinco de Mayo. This time we booked a very attractively appointed two-room suite on the 23rd floor with flatscreen TVs, huge bathroom with Jacuzzi tub and shower, two sinks, big closets, mini bar (which the Travel Diva never touches), robes, slippers, lush toiletries and great views of the magical mountains that at different times of the day change colors from purples to blues, grays and amber. Suites are definitely the way to go. You also get private access by your room key in the elevator.
Las time we went into Palm Springs for dinner, this time we dined at the hotel’s Cielo–a penthouse restaurant offering awesome views of the surrounding mountains and softy lit by gorgeous chandeliers that change colors almost on cue with your mood. Our yummy meal began with ahi tuna presented beautifully and tasty and moved along to an exceptional Chilean seabass with a lobster salad, and Porterhouse steak cooked just right, bottle of so-so wine (the prices were a bit high for our budget so opted for a $38 bottle, about the cheapest on the list that was just okay). We skipped dessert because we gave at the earlier Potrero Canyon Buffet buffet (a really fantastic deal folks, lots of fine food from breakfast choices to Asian and pizza and awesome desserts). The all-you-can eat affair is less than $15 a person and really good quality. In fact Morongo’s breakfast, lunch and dinner buffet is among the best for any hotel casino we’ve ever visited. And this from a dining diva, too.
The weather was warm and wonderful and we spent a lot of time at the Oasis Pool–an inviting area with tiny sandy “beaches”, private cabanas and lots of comfy chaises.
We also booked massages which came with an extra bonus “express mani or pedi”, I took the mani, he opted for the pedi. My rub was deep and thorough, but Richard didn’t fare as well, his therapist was a little too light handed for his tastes, but he said it was still relaxing. The little spa is quite satisfying with steambaths, saunas, whirlpools, cold plunge, lockers and assorted beverages to sip on. We were there for “Mimosa Monday” and enjoyed the cool drink after our steams.
Morongo offers assorted specials on just about everything from 30 percent off spa purchases, 20% off sservices, 1/2 price wines in Cielo on Tuesday and Thursdays (our waitress forgot to remind us and we goofed or we would have order a better bottle), and discounts depending on the day of the week, obviously Monday through Thursday getting the better rate, higher fees on weekends.
You can’t beat this hotel for charm, service, cleanliness (even the public loos are spotless), buffets and pay outs at the slots–if you keep it you can win, alas most of us toss it back in. They also have a rewards club, “Winner’s Circle” which gives gamblers cash back for play.
